How to Create a Custom Elopement Timeline
Creating a custom elopement timeline is key to making sure your big day flows smoothly and stays stress-free. Unlike traditional weddings, elopements often have fewer moving parts, but that doesn’t mean planning the day is any less important. Whether you’re saying your vows at a courthouse, on a beach, or in a garden, crafting the schedule helps ensure you get all the moments captured, while also leaving room for relaxation and fun. Let’s dive into how you can create a timeline that fits your aesthetic and makes the most of your intimate celebration.
1. Start with Your Ceremony Time
When do you want to say your vows? Pick a time that works for you and whoever’s there to witness the magic. If you’re planning to take pictures outside, golden hour is ideal.
2. Getting Ready
When should you start getting glammed up? Plan enough time to feel relaxed—around 1-2 hours should do the trick. You want time to get dressed, have a moment with your partner, and get those little detail shots (rings, dress, shoes—all the vibes). We recommend getting ready at a pretty local hotel (Palihouse or The Craft House Inn are great), or something more upscale but close by like El Encanto or Hotel Californian.
3. Factor in Travel Time
If you’re jumping between locations, don’t forget to account for travel time! Whether you’re heading from your hotel to the courthouse or cruising between photo spots, make sure you’ve got plenty of time so you’re not stressing out. We usually factor in around 15 minutes for travel around Santa Barbara (we’re a small town afterall)!
4. Photos
You’ll want to get those dreamy couple shots, so leave at least 30-60 minutes for portraits after your ceremony. If you’re hitting multiple spots, make sure there’s time to travel between them. You’ll be happy you gave yourself some time to get those moments and shots. We also like to add in 15-30 minutes prior to ceremony for individual photos.
5. Post-Ceremony Celebration
What’s the plan after “I do”? Whether you’re popping champagne, having a quiet moment together, sharing private vows or sitting down to a cozy dinner, make sure to add it to your timeline. If you’re heading straight to dinner, plan for that, too—it’s the perfect way to unwind after all the fun.
6. Take Breaks
It’s your day, so don’t forget to breathe! Make sure there’s space in your timeline to relax and enjoy the moment. You don’t want to be running around all day without time to just chill and enjoy each other’s company.
7. Add Some Buffer Time
Things don’t always go according to plan—and that’s okay! Leave a little extra time in between events so you’re not rushing. It’ll make everything feel way more relaxed and fun. We like to have a 10-15 minute buffer time between scheduled events.
8. End with a Something Extra Wrap up your coverage with a little something extra—whether it’s a sunset walk, a private toast, or just some alone time with your partner. It’s the perfect way to end the day on a high note and make it all feel super personal.
And there you have it!
